Condolence From: Matthew Cecile
Condolence: Gertrude Cecile

What an amazing woman. So selfless. So caring.

Born in 1920 and grew up during the depression. Saw the evolution of the telephone. The creation and evolution of television. World war 2, Amongst many other things.

Some knew her as Mom, some knew her as sister, or grandma. She was my grandmother and I knew her as Nanny.

We were very close. I have many memories of her. One she often shared with me, was one when i was very young.. I kept telling her leau leau! And she didnt understand.. so i brought her to the sink and turned on the water.. and repeated leau leau.. thats when she knew i meant water.. i just wasnt using the right language.

Another memory i have, is when i was about 6.. she put me on the step stool in front of the stove, and there was a pot. She told me keep stirring as she threw in all kinds of veggies and meat and spices. I would taste test every once and awhile and told her it needed more salt. I thank her for teaching me things like this at such a young age.

I remember her telling me how and when she met Wilfred, her husband, which i never had the opportunity of meeting. But from what my Dad and Nanny told me of him, He was an amazing man. He & Gertrude met on the pembroke bridge, and when she looked into his eyes, of the most incredible piercing blue, she knew he was the one, and fell in love at first sight.

The last time i really saw her was at christmas, and even thought she stumbled on her words, i understood. She looked me in the eye, and told me that she loved me.

Nanny, i cant believe that your gone. You out lived all of your siblings. I thought you were invincible and that youd live forever. But here we are today, marking your death in your 98th year. You had such a long and amazing life filled with incredible people and irreplaceable memories. Ill always hold you close to my heart.

Yes we are here. All of us, today, now, in this moment. But lets not dwell on her loss. Instead, lets make today about the celebration of her life. Remember all the good times, the memories that each and every one of us has, of her. And lets share all of those memories with one another today.

You never stop loving someone. You just learn how to live without them.
